pointed me to a free RSS reader called BlogExpress which is available at
http://www.UsableLabs.com/productBlogExpress.html
although this product does not work with a HTTP proxy yet.
I was using Feedreader from http://www.feedreader.com
before but this one has a very basic user interface. On the other hand
it supports a proxy and has an internal webserver so you can use it to
build your own web news aggregator.
